State Bass Fishing Tournament Could Become Reality In 2009

The Illinois High School Association Board of Directors swallowed the bait Tuesday, approving a recommendation to add a bass fishing tournament in the spring of 2009.

The recommendation was made by IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman. He and administrator Dave Gannaway had harbored hopes of adding a prep fishing tournament for years but only recently realized the interest level and potential for such an event.

"The level of support for a bass fishing tournament, from both our membership and from other nonschool groups, has demonstrated clearly to our board that this event is one with potential tremendous value to our schools," Hickman said in an IHSA press release. "Implementing such an activity will enable our schools to provide another opportunity for students that will enrich their educational experience and keep with the association's mission."

A stipulation of the board was that adequate sponsorships must be secured in advance of the tournament. read more
