The Challenges of Saltwater Sport Fishing
Saltwater sport fishing receives the best of definitions when contrasted to commercial fishing: we are talking abount an activity that demands nothing for the fun it gives in return. Profit making or survival issues have no share in sport fishing that remains totally devoted to leisure use.
The most basic of saltwater sport fishing form requires nothing else but lots of hooks, a rod, a line and a reel. Of course, there are more complex devices, known as terminal tackle, that people use to increase the impact on fish. Among the terminal tackle items used in both commercial and sport fishing, floats, swivels and weights should be mentioned first. Sometimes, instead of baits fishermen rely on different types of lures, thus, sport fishing incorporates handcrafter applications as well as plastic artificial flies and imitations of crawlers.
Although initially a field dominated by males, nowadays more and more women are taking part to sport fishing events. Some hobbyists are disatisfied with the way things stand in the fishing circles and the big paradox refers to the lack of a clear sport purpose. Why fish if you eventually release the catch anyway? And yet, this is the whole idea behind sport fishing. Relaxation and fun define a sport that can be easily defined as a catch-release game.
Various practices carry the name of sport fishing. The reasons why people have come up with this diversity were mainlyinvented to set competition standards and move the practice to a more peaceful environment friendly level. Thus, on the average sport fishing varieties include noodling, big-game fishing, kayak fishing and trout tickling. For example, in the case of kayak fishing people rely on stealthy sea kayaks that make the access possible to areas that are unfishable from either land or from other, conventional boats. In big-game fishing the main action occurs from boats, too, and the catch is represented by large open-water fishes such as sharks, malin or tuna. Anyway, sport fishing contests involve individuals when they occur from land and teams when they are run from boats.
As for the beginnings of sport fishing, it is known that it got its initial rudiementary form between the 16th and 17th centuries, but big-game fishing obviously developed as a sport after the motorized boats were invented. In 1898, the marine biologist, Dr. Charles Frederick Holder created the foundation for this sport and published a number of books and articles that cover a nice combination of exciting stories and accurate scientific details.
